SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - About 20 horses still need to be evacuated after being stranded for days in flood waters in San Jose.
KSBW reports (https://bit.ly/2lNfIkI ) a team of horse owners, volunteers, and city animal control officials cheered Thursday as horses walked gingerly across Coyote Creek and out of a ranch.
Creek water levels finally dropped low enough that five horses could safely make it across with help from riders guiding them.
About two-thirds of the 14,000 residents evacuated three days ago were being allowed to return home while 3,800 people remain Friday under a mandatory evacuation order issued when a creek overflowed following heavy rains and sent waist-high water into neighborhoods.
Twenty-eight horses were trapped by flood waters Tuesday when Coyote Creek overflowed.
The rescue team said walking the remaining horses across the creek will take until Friday to complete.
