METAIRIE, La. (AP) - A New Orleans-area sheriff says a pickup truck was rear-ended, then hit a utility pole that crashed onto a house and started a fire.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand says in a news release that everyone in the house got out safely before it caught fire but two dogs inside the house died of smoke inhalation.
Normand says an Acura TL rear-ended the pickup shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday. He says the luxury car’s driver complained of minor injuries and the pickup’s driver was unhurt.
He said 20-year-old Tyler Hellmers of Kenner would be arrested for reckless driving and driving while intoxicated following his release from an area hospital.
A sheriff’s office spokesman didn’t immediately respond to an email asking whether Hellmers had an attorney.
