KERSEY, Pa. (AP) - County commissioners say they’ve been told that a Pennsylvania landfill where a worker was buried in a landslide of dirt and garbage has partially reopened.

A large section of the Greentree Landfill in Elk County collapsed Feb. 8 onto five workers. Four escaped but 49-year-old William Pierce was buried under 40 feet of trash and smothered.

The state Department of Environmental Protection and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating and working to shore up the landfill to prevent similar incidents.

A spokesman for Advanced Disposal, of Ponte Vedra, Florida, says it’s bringing in materials requested by DEP to improve its landfill. The company has also hired an engineer to assess the accident.

County Commissioner Janis Kemmer says the landfill is now accepting garbage from truck in another section of the landfill.
