RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Durham architect Phil Freelon says his group will work to complete a Raleigh park which will honor the contributions of African-Americans to North Carolina.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports (https://bit.ly/2le9rv1 ) Freelon told a luncheon in Raleigh that he expects the project to be completed in 18 to 24 months, depending on funding. He spoke at a luncheon on Wednesday.
Freelon is known most notably for his design work on the National Museum of African American History and Culture on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
The N.C. Freedom Park has been in the works since 2002. In 2006, a committee identified a proposed site just east of the Legislative Building, and money was allocated for it in the state budget. But the recession halted those plans.
