GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Events in Greensboro are memorializing the date on which a former slave was lynched in 1870.
On Tuesday, the Greensboro News & Record (https://bit.ly/2leaf5F ) reports the Peace and Justice Task Force of the Salem Presbytery, the local group of Presbyterian (U.S.A.) churches, is holding a “memorializing” service on the grounds near the Alamance County Courthouse where the lynching took place.
Also Tuesday, Bryan Stevenson is speaking at the Greensboro Coliseum to make the occasion. Stevenson is the author of “Just Mercy,” a book on the case of Wyatt Outlaw, who was killed on February 26, 1870. His efforts have reversed death penalties for dozens of condemned prisoners, and he’s researched thousands of lynchings between 1877 and 1950.
Stevenson says he eventually wants to create a museum and a lynching memorial.
