WILLIAMSTON, S.C. (AP) - Anderson County residents are complaining about a company’s cleanup efforts from a gasoline spill near Belton more than two years ago.
Staff from the Department of Health and Environmental Control spent more than two hours at a school in Williamston listening to complaints about Kinder Morgan’s cleanup.
DHEC staff was asked repeatedly if Kinder Morgan and its cleanup contractor can be trusted. Residents also wanted to know how close the contamination is to Broadway Lake. Residents also asked if the state was doing its own water and soil testing at the site.
About 350 acres were saturated by the 2014 leak of 369,000 gallons of fuel.
DHEC says it’s about to do its own sampling to confirm company test results. DHEC says the cleanup could five to 10 years.
