SAUGERTIES, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities are investigating a collision between a freight train and taxi that killed a passenger in the cab and left two other people injured.
Police in the Ulster County town of Saugerties (SAW’-ger-teez) say the accident occurred around 11:45 a.m. Thursday at a railroad crossing that doesn’t have gates or warning lights.
Officials say a van operated by a cab company from nearby Kingston was hit by a southbound CSX train consisting of just two locomotives and no cars.
Police say a rear-seat passenger in the cab, 50-year-old Bertha Whispell, of Saugerties, was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
A 52-year-old man riding with her and the 43-year-old man driving the cab were treated at Kingston hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
No one on the train was hurt.
