FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) - Six elementary school students in Florence have been treated after being exposed to tear gas that blew into the air near their school.

Florence Fire Department officials say the Arizona Department of Corrections was conducting training with a chemical normally used for inmate compliance around noon Wednesday.

Authorities say the wind caused the chemical to reach the children on school playground a few blocks away, causing throat and eye irritation.

Florence Unified School District officials say between 20 and 25 students were evaluated at the nurse’s office by paramedics, but none were hospitalized.
