PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Recently released figures indicate Rhode Island College was the only institution in the region that didn’t see its endowment fund decline in 2015-16.
WPRI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2lelsn9 ) the Providence college’s endowment grew by more than 20 percent to $25.7 million.
The endowment fund for Johnson & Wales University fell by more than 9 percent to $239 million.
Roger Williams University in Bristol fell by more than 8 percent to $79 million and Brown University dropped to $2.96 billion - a decrease of 3.6 percent.
Colleges use payouts from their endowments’ long-term investment returns to help cover operating costs.
The National Association of College and University Business Officers says colleges and universities will find it harder to support their missions with continued below-average investment returns.
