LOS ANGELES (AP) - Transit ridership dropped last year across Los Angeles County despite two major light rail extensions, as fewer people take the bus.
The Los Angeles Times reports Monday (https://lat.ms/2kKPMFr) that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the region’s largest carrier, lost more than six percent of its total boardings in 2016.
Metro says subway and light-rail boardings rose just over 4 percent, bolstered by the debut of the Gold Line and Expo Line extensions. But those gains did not cancel out a decline in annual bus ridership, which fell nearly 9 percent to 304 million - the lowest in more than a decade.
Bus trips have dropped 18 percent since 2009.
