ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. (AP) - Authorities in suburban Chicago say the search of a Joliet residence didn’t find the remains of a local man who went missing more than 40 years ago.

Rolling Meadows police said Tuesday that human remains weren’t located in the home as part of their investigation into the New Year’s Eve 1975 disappearance of 19-year-old Michael Mansfield. In 2011, his one-time roommate confessed to killing him. Authorities never were able to locate Mansfield’s body.

Police had said their investigation into Mansfield’s disappearance led detectives to the home in unincorporated Will County.

However authorities said Tuesday that “additional leads were developed and this investigation remains active.”

Russell Smrekar was serving a 300-year prison sentence for a 1976 double-murder when he told investigators in October 2011 that he killed Mansfield. He died of a terminal illness shortly after.
