EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) - Eau Claire police say the man who was fatally shot by a police officer last weekend was the original 911 caller who reported a man with a gun outside a hotel.

Authorities Wednesday identified the man who was killed as 49-year-old Matthew Zank of Eau Claire.

The Eau Claire Police Department says Officer Kris O’Neill responded to the Scottish Inns & Suites Saturday morning after a 911 caller reported a man in the parking lot was pointing a gun at passing cars.

Unknown to police, Zank, who was staying at the hotel, was the 911 caller. O’Neill found Zank in the parking lot, ordered him to drop his gun and shot him when he refused to comply.

O’Neill is on standard administrative assignment. The La Crosse Police Department is investigating.
