EL PASO, Texas (AP) - Authorities in West Texas say an elementary school student took a gun to his campus that had been reported stolen in New Mexico in 2012.

The El Paso Times reports an investigation by police determined the gun and ammunition were found by the student, who took it to his campus on Thursday.

Staff at the school learned of the .45-caliber handgun and called police.

Ysleta school district officials in El Paso say the student, whose name was not released, has been disciplined.

Police say because of the child’s age, Child Protective Services has begun an investigation.
