ALBANY, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia church is expecting to feed more than 1,000 families who come to its annual Christmas Food Giveaway.

WALB-TV reports the First Apostolic Church in Albany has been taking food donations to give to needy South Georgia families for 21 years.

The church was holding this year’s Christmas giveaway Saturday. Its pews were filled with food boxes stocked with meat, greens, fruit, canned vegetables and peanut butter that families can take home and eat over the holidays.

Betty Jackson, a bishop at the church, says members are especially concerned about feeding children who may go hungry during the holidays when schools are closed.

The church gave food boxes to 1,500 families last year. Jackson says even more people are expected this season.
