MIAMI (AP) - A fire in a 17th floor apartment of a high-rise apartment complex in Florida sent four people to the hospital and displaced dozens of residents.

The fire broke out Thursday night in Wilton Towers on Sunny Isles Beach.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesman Felipe Lay tells new outlets that flames and thick black smoke were pouring from the apartment when firefighters arrived. He says some 20 crews fought the blaze and evacuated the building, which is near the beach.

Lay says fire didn’t spread to any other units.

Firefighters went door-to-door clearing the building. By 10 p.m. Thursday everyone but those living on the 17th floor were able to return.

Several people were treated for smoke inhalation and Lay says two people are in critical condition.

An investigation continues.
