COLCHESTER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont state leaders are asking residents to remember to put on their winter tires.

State Commissioner of Public Safety Tom Anderson said Tuesday in Colchester he had to learn “the hard way” that Vermont residents need winter tires. The Burlington Free Press reports he and other state officials say they would not endorse the idea of requiring winter tires through a legal mandate.

Winter tires are mandatory in the Canadian province of Quebec.

State officials are encouraging drivers to prepare for winter, to drive at safe speeds in the snow and to leave safe distances for plow trucks to work.
