D.C. Attorney General Karl A. Racine has announced that a company that had run a student loan debt relief scam in the District has been order to pay $425,000 in fines and refunds.
The D.C. Superior Court ruled Nov. 29 that the Student Aid Center must pay a $233,000 fine and $192,824.95 in refunds to 233 city customers.
Mr. Racine filed a lawsuit against the Student Aid Center in May 2016.
The company had offered an “Obama Student Loan Forgiveness Program” despite having no relationship with the federal government. It also was found to be charging customers for loan repayment plans that the Department of Education offers for free.
