Following their season-ending loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, the Houston Texans announced that executive vice president of football operations and general manager Rick Smith will be taking an extended leave of absence, effective immediately.

“I have chosen to take an extended leave of absence to focus my attention and intention on my wife’s complete recovery from her recent diagnosis of breast cancer,” Smith said in a statement. “We are faithful and trust in God’s promise of healing and Wholeness.”
Smith has served as Houston’s general manager since 2006 and oversaw all personnel decisions. He signed a four-year extension through the 2020 NFL draft with the Texans last year.
