CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire Fish and Game says deer hunters had near-record success in 2017.
The Concord Monitor reports that the unofficial deer tally for the season from September through the first week of December was 12,269. That’s 15 percent above last year’s tally, and biologists suggest the herd is healthy after recent hard winters.
Hunters weren’t as successful with wild turkeys and bears.
Kent Gustafson, wildlife programs administrator, said hunters saw fewer of them because they weren’t foraging as much because of plentiful acorns, nuts and berries.
Officials say 586 black bears were killed during the season from September through November. That’s a third fewer than a record tally the year before. The number of turkeys shot by hunters was 434, compared to 1,101 the year before.
