DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a Southern California man has been arrested after an improvised explosive device was found in his car after he was pulled over by a sheriff’s deputy.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department says Tuesday that 55-year-old Norman Bell was arrested on suspicion of reckless possession of a destructive device.

The department says Bell was pulled over Saturday afternoon in unincorporated South Desert Hot Springs. They say the deputy noticed a “suspicious device” inside Bell’s car and called for the bomb squad.

Deputy Armando Munoz, a sheriff’s spokesman, says the device was “similar to a pipe bomb.”

Asked whether there was any indication of what Bell may have been intending to do with the device, Munoz said sheriff’s officials were still investigating.
