ST. ALBANS, Vt. (AP) - State police statistics show that speeding is on the rise across Vermont after declining for several years.
The Burlington Free Press reports that in 2015, the state police issued 5,447 tickets for a host of speeding violations. Two weeks before the end of 2017 the number was 8,975.
And the increase in speeding this year comes as Vermont is grappling with more traffic fatalities.
The National Transportation Safety Board says speeding puts drivers at greater risk of being in crashes and increases the severity of injuries arising from those wrecks.
State Police Lt. John Flannigan says Vermont has a “speeding problem.”
Vermont is one of only nine states that haven’t raised the interstate speed limit to 70 mph or higher.
