BALTIMORE (AP) - The number of people in Baltimore killed in fires is the highest it’s been in a decade.

The Baltimore Sun reports that there have been 28 deaths by fire in the city so far this year.

Fire Chief Niles R. Ford said the high number has taken a toll on the city’s firefighters. Six children died in a blaze in Northeast Baltimore in January.

Ford he urged residents to call the city for a free installation of a 10-year smoke detector. He also urged residents to keep their Christmas trees watered.
