DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Attorneys who previously worked for a civil rights center at the University of North Carolina have set up a separate law practice named for the man whose work inspired the center’s creation.
The Herald-Sun of Durham reports that Mark Dorosin and Elizabeth Haddix have opened the Julius L. Chambers Center for Civil Rights. They have acquired the former caseload of the UNC Center for Civil Rights now that UNC system policy prevents that center from litigating cases.
Chambers was a civil rights attorney and the first director of the UNC center, which helped the poor and disenfranchised.
Haddix and Dorosin plan to establish the Chambers Center as a nonprofit. In the future, they could decide to affiliate with another university law school or with a state or national advocacy group.
