TOWSON, Md. (AP) - Following two discoveries of racist graffiti this month, a Catholic boys’ school in Maryland closed for a day.
News outlets report Loyola Blakefield issued a statement Thursday saying the school was shut for the day as the graffiti found in the bathroom Wednesday “included language of hate and bigotry, as well as a suggestive threat.” The same bathroom was also vandalized Dec. 4. Both instances included messages specifically targeting the black community.
Baltimore County police wrote in the incident report that school officials apprised them of previously unreported ongoing bias-related incidents that began in fall, and said officials are concerned with “the escalation of the language.”
Police wrote there was no clear immediate threat to the school.
The Jesuit school serving grades six through 12 is expected to reopen Friday.
