SEARCY, Ark. (AP) - Authorities have identified the man who was fatally shot by a White County deputy over the weekend.
The White County Sheriff’s Office says 69-year-old James Newman of Rose Bud died at a hospital following the Saturday night shooting. White County Chief Deputy Phillip Miller says two deputies were responding to a shots fired call when they encountered Newman.
Miller says Newman was holding a rifle, and a deputy opened fire after Newman refused to put down his gun. Authorities have not released the name of the deputy who shot Newman.
Arkansas State Police agents are investigating the shooting, and prosecutors will decide whether it was justified.
