I am kind of lost when it comes to all this talk about a “baby bust,” fertility and the declining birth rate (“On Rubio-Lee Amendment, Republicans missed chance to stem ’baby bust,’” Web, Dec. 7). I have heard arguments from several quarters as to the main reason, but my question is, Who is and is not having children?

One source says that working Americans are too caught up with careers. Another questions whether increasing the child tax credit just offers an incentive to those on perpetual welfare to have more children born into a less-than-successful situations. The pinheads in Washington and all of these “shrinky dink” think tanks can’t offer a clear explanation.

I have seen a study from Italy that says that the native, indigenous Italians will vanish in 50 years due to overwhelming foreign influx and the upper echelons of Italian society focused on careers and just surviving.

Russian President Putin said some years ago that “we need more Russians having children” in an effort to rebuff the Mongol hoards flooding the Russian Republic. Maybe Putin was right. I have five children and five grandsons so far. I have done my part. Maybe it’s time for someone else to make the effort for America.
