HATFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Authorities have identified a man who died after his car plunged into a Massachusetts river.

Northwestern district attorney’s office spokeswoman Mary Carey said Thursday that the man was 34-year-old Mark Gilman, of Hatfield, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Authorities say the car went into the Connecticut River in Hatfield at about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday. The vehicle was pulled from the water several hours later.

A woman who lives in the area says she witnessed the crash and called 911. She says the car appeared to be speeding before it went into the water.
