JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Officials in a North Carolina city say 5,000 gallons of sewage have spilled into a creek.
The city of Jacksonville said on its web page that the spill occurred around noon on Monday at a pump station in Northeast Creek Park.
According to the statement, a city utility maintenance staff member accidentally opened a valve while a bypass pump was connected to the station, allowing sewage to spray from the valve. The valve was closed with some of the escaped wastewater draining to the Northeast Creek, which is a tributary of the New River.
The city said state officials were notified and suggested remedies were immediately put into operation.
City officials are looking into what caused the spill.
