RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - Seven people have been taken to the hospital after an unknown white powder was found with a letter sent to a Southern California sheriff’s office.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Chris Willison says the seven department employees were decontaminated Monday and then taken to the hospital as a precaution.

He says none had complained of medical problems.

Riverside Fire Department Battalion Chief Bruce Vanderhorst told reporters the substance was discovered inside a package on the fourth floor of the Sheriff’s Department’s administration building.

He says the building has been evacuated as hazardous materials crews work to identify the substance.
