DOVER, Del. (AP) - A convicted killer serving life in prison for a murder committed when he was 17 has been resentenced to 50 years in prison.
Twenty-nine-year-old Andrew Brown was resentenced Friday, 11 years to the day that he received two mandatory life sentences for the 2005 murder of 19-year-old Steven Cleveland. Brown told authorities he shot Cleveland because Cleveland was too slow in complying with demands to strip during a robbery.
Brown’s resentencing follows a 2012 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that declared mandatory life-without-parole sentences for juvenile killers to be unconstitutional.
Brown received a mandatory 25 years each for two murder counts. Under state law, he can petition for a sentence reduction after serving at least 30 behind bars.
He was sentenced to an additional 18 years on firearm and robbery charges.
