CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A West Virginia police officer who is facing charges related to a fatal crash that killed an 80-year-old woman has pleaded not guilty.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports Charleston Police Department Officer Stephen Doss entered the plea Tuesday. Twenty-seven-year-old Doss is charged with speeding, an emergency vehicle violation and negligent homicide in the January death of Dora Clarke.

A criminal complaint states that Doss struck Clarke’s vehicle while responding to a report of a man armed with a knife. Clarke died five days later.

Charleston Police Chief Brent Webster told the newspaper in January that it appeared that Doss was speeding without using his emergency lights or siren.

Doss’s attorney Michael Del Giudice says Doss is on administrative leave from the police department. A trial date is scheduled for Sept. 25.
