HAYMARKET, Va. (AP) - Virginia officials are celebrating completion of a new highway interchange that utilizes a new design configured to reduce congestion and improve safety.
The Virginia Department of Transportation says the new $59 million interchange in Haymarket, at the intersection of Interstate 66 and U.S. 15, is the first in northern Virginia to feature a “diverging diamond” design.
The interchange is designed in such a way to eliminate left turns into oncoming traffic. Officials say it can accommodate twice the number of cars as a traditional diamond interchange.
The diverging diamond has been implemented in Louisa and Roanoke, and two more are in the works in Stafford and Blacksburg.
Work on the Haymarket interchange began in 2015.
