ELLISBURG, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a 2-year-old boy has been killed in a one-car accident on Interstate 81 in northern New York.

Troopers say a car being driven in the northbound lanes by a 59-year-old Watertown man went off the highway’s west shoulder around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Jefferson County town of Ellisburg, 45 miles (72 kilometers) north of Syracuse.

Police say the car hit a guardrail and came to a stop.

Troopers say a toddler in the rear seat, Jayden Thurston, Watertown, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was treated at the Watertown hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. A front-seat passenger, 28-year-old Joshua Thurston, of Watertown, wasn’t injured.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
