AHOSKIE, N.C. (AP) - Two people were killed in a house fire in North Carolina, and state and local law enforcement are investigating the deaths.

Hertford County Sheriff Dexter Hayes told several media outlets that a deputy on patrol spotted a house fire outside of Ahoskie just after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. Fire department and emergency personnel were called to the scene.

Hayes said firefighters found two bodies inside the brick home after they extinguished the fire.



The sheriff said an autopsy is being done to determine the cause of the deaths, adding that foul play isn’tt suspected. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Officials haven’t identified the victims because their relatives haven’t been told.

The State Bureau of Investigation is joining the sheriff’s office in the investigation into the fire.
