BOSTON (AP) - Republican Gov. Charlie Baker is defending his administration’s choice for a new general manager of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.
Luis Manuel Ramirez, a business executive with experience in corporate turnarounds but none in transportation, is set to take over as the MBTA’s chief executive Sept. 12.
Baker said Tuesday he’s confident Ramirez can do the job.
The Boston Globe reports that a few weeks after Ramirez left his job as chief executive of a Dallas-based company called Global Power Equipment Group, the company disclosed it had discovered accounting problems. It’s now under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Shareholders have sued the company, naming Ramirez as a defendant.
The T said it knew of Global Power’s financial problems before selecting Ramirez, who has referred questions to the MBTA.
