CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - A New Hampshire preservation group is hoping to save 52 historic barns across the state this year over fears some could either fall apart or be torn down to make way for development.
The New Hampshire Preservation Alliance has provided 41 grants this year to barn owners for professional assessments that allow them to develop a road map for preservation. Among them is a dairy barn in Westmoreland dating back to 1850 and one in Lee that had been damaged in a 2015 snowstorm.
Beverly Thomas, the group’s program director who also runs its barn program, said the structures go back to the 1700s and include large dairy barns from the 1800s that are increasingly at risk because they are hard to maintain and don’t have a good use.
