NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Residents are clashing with officials over the future of one of Newark’s most diverse areas.
NJTV reported (https://bit.ly/2uVZmdK ) officials are pushing for more development in the Ironbound section of Newark.
The city’s main train station is in the neighborhood, which is also filled with popular restaurants.
City officials introduced a new zoning amendment which will allow buildings in the area to go as high as 15 stories.
Daniel Wiley of the Ironbound Community Corporation questions whether the proposed development benefits developers or the community.
Baye Adofo-Wilson, deputy mayor for housing and economic development, says the zoning will create “growth in a way that (is) integrated, affordable and successful.”
Wiley sees increased taxes.
“I think the biggest threat is that the cost of living is going to go up, and the quality of life is going to change,” he said.
