HUNTER, N.Y. (AP) - A celebration is planned on top of Hunter Mountain in the Catskills to mark the 100th anniversary of its fire tower.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says the fire tower has recently undergone $48,000 in improvements. At a ceremony at noon Saturday, a plaque marking the anniversary will be unveiled at the tower.

Rehabilitation work included replacing the wind-damaged roof, fixing windows, replacing metal grates and painting the entire tower.

At 4,040 feet, Hunter Mountain fire tower is the highest elevation fire tower in New York.

The Catskill Fire Tower Project is a joint initiative of The Catskill Center for Conservation and Development and the state. The last of the five remaining Catskill towers was restored and reopened to the public in 2000.
