EAST HELENA, Mont. (AP) - The East Helena school board has decided to ask voters if they want to pursue building a high school.
The possibility of expanding the town’s elementary school district was made possible by legislation passed this spring. Elementary districts with more than 1,000 students have the option of expanding to add a high school district.
Voters will not be asked to approve a tax increase initially. November’s vote will ask if the district should begin the planning process for a new high school.
If voters approve the planning, the district will have two years within which to ask voters to approve a construction bond. Superintendent Ron Whitmoyer estimated the high school construction bond would be about $25 million. East Helena students currently attend Helena High School.
