BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - The University at Buffalo is celebrating the arrival of its largest-ever medical school class.
The 180 students received their white coats at a ceremony Friday in a symbolic rite of passage.
The school was able to increase the size of the class because of a new downtown campus. Students in the class of 2021 will head to the eight-story Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in January, after spending their first semester in the existing facility.
School officials say the expansion was necessary to help fill a physician shortage in the region and nation.
Of the 180 students, 152 are from New York state.
