Project to fix Baltimore sewage backups gets underway

BALTIMORE (AP) - Officials have kicked off a $430 million Baltimore-area sewer project intended to fix backups that lead to overflows.

The Baltimore Sun reported Thursday that the so-called “headworks project” at the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant in Dundalk will add pumps to move backed-up sewage and water into holding tanks.

That will help during storms, when sewage and rainwater overwhelm the system and overflows end up in the Jones Falls and Inner Harbor.

The cost of the project is being split between the city and Baltimore County.

Mayor Catherine Pugh says it will fix “a very stubborn problem.”

The project is expected to be done by 2020.
