OWLS HEAD, Maine (AP) - A World War II veteran has relived a part of his former career - flying over Maine in a 73-year-old B-17 “Flying Fortress” bomber.
Eighty-nine-year-old Kenneth Morang says Monday was his first time in an airplane since he jumped out of them as a paratrooper in the Pacific during World War II. The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2whncOO ) the B-17 known as Sentimental Journey is one of the last Flying Fortress bombers still in operation, landing at the Owls Head Transportation Museum.
The 73-year-old plane is owned by Commemorative Air Force, an Arizona nonprofit dedicated to preserving vintage military aircraft. Sentimental Journey never saw combat, but served as a mapping plane, a search-and-rescue craft and as a “mother ship” for aircraft collecting data from nuclear weapons tests.
