COLUMBIA, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut State Police have identified a man shot by a trooper as a car theft suspect from New Mexico.

Authorities said Wednesday that Jay Olson was shot and wounded Tuesday at the Hop River Motel in Columbia after he pointed a gun at a trooper responding to a suspicious incident.

Olson is hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. He’s charged with attempted first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, interfering with police and weapons crimes.

Olson’s last known address was Bernalillo, New Mexico, near Albuquerque. Officials say he was driving a car reported stolen in New Mexico. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer who could respond to the allegations.

State police have not released the name of the trooper who shot Olson. The trooper was placed on administrative duty pending an investigation.
