RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The confirmation process for North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s Cabinet secretaries is advancing with a Senate panel’s recommendation of Commerce Department chief Tony Copeland.

Copeland received unanimous support Wednesday from the Senate Commerce and Insurance Committee. The former assistant commerce secretary under then-Gov. Mike Easley responded to nearly an hour of questions from senators on topics ranging from broadband access and manufacturing to his recent work history.

Copeland’s recommendation now goes to the Senate Nominations Committee. That committee later Wednesday recommended the entire Senate confirm Administration Secretary Machelle Sanders and Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen. Full chamber votes are set for Thursday.

Also Thursday, Secretary Michael Regan of the Department of Environmental Quality is expected to answer questions before another Senate policy committee.
