AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine’s annual youth turkey hunting day is here.
The youth hunt takes place on Saturday and kicks off the annual spring turkey hunt, which begins on Monday and runs until June 3. Young hunters are allowed to take up to two bearded wild turkeys in most of the state, except for some parts of northern Maine.
The main spring turkey hunt also limits hunters to two bearded birds in most of the state. Northern Maine hunters are limited to only one.
There is also a turkey hunt in the fall. Maine’s turkey hunting seasons have grown considerably over the past 30 years. Hunters usually catch thousands of birds. In 1986, they harvested nine.
