NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Judges in Virginia have appointed a new city treasurer to replace another who was jailed on corruption charges.
Media outlets report Norfolk Circuit Court judges appointed James Oliver on Thursday to replace Anthony Burfoot, who is imprisoned for counts of public corruption and perjury.
Burfoot is serving a six-year federal prison sentence and had been suspended in February. He is alleged to have taken bribes from people working on various construction projects throughout the city. Burfoot has maintained his innocence and his attorney, Andrew Sacks, says he plans to appeal.
Virginia Beach resident Amy Ortega had been acting treasurer since Burfoot’s suspension however laws require the treasurer must live in Norfolk.
Oliver has served as city manager in Portsmouth and Norfolk.
