AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - New state filings show that offshore investment companies and a Las Vegas firm are bank-rolling a campaign to build a casino in southern Maine.
A campaign to build a new casino in York County has qualified for the November ballot.
The wording of the proposal would only allow campaign donor Lisa Scott’s brother Shawn Scott to build the casino.
New filings show that Shawn Scott’s Capital Seven LLC gave loans of more than $3 million to three new groups registered to back the proposal.
Maine Public reports that the state ethics commission says the filings will likely be considered late. Lisa Scott said the campaign didn’t fully understand Maine’s disclosure law.
Republican Gov. Paul LePage has criticized the proposed casino, and said the proposal will hurt the state’s economy.
