WASHINGTON (AP) - Transportation officials in Washington are celebrating Arbor Day by planting trees.
The District Department of Transportation’s Urban Forestry Division will be planting trees near East Capitol Street, Southeast, on Friday. City officials say they will plant approximately 70 trees in the area to create a buffer separating pedestrians from vehicle traffic.
The city says the District Department of Transportation’s Urban Forestry Division planted its 8,000th tree of the 2016-2017 tree planting season on Monday. The city says there are about 150,000 trees along residential and commercial streets that are owned and maintained by transportation officials. There are another 65,000 trees owned and maintained by transportation officials in public spaces including parks and schoolyards.
