CUMBERLAND, Va. (AP) - Two teenage sisters have been found dead after their car ran off the road and into the Willis River, swollen from recent heavy rain.
News outlets report that 16-year-old Michaela B. Woodson and 14-year-old Tyauna D. Woodson were on their way to Cumberland High School on Wednesday morning when their car veered off the road at a river crossing and was swept away.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post that a bumper and license plate were found on a bridge, raising concern that a vehicle had fallen into the river. The car was not immediately visible to first responders.
State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says divers found the vehicle about 2 p.m. She said Michaela Woodson was driving.
The crash remains under investigation.
