SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - Jury selection has begun in the death penalty trial of an inmate charged in a guard’s death in a federal prison in Pennsylvania four years ago.
Forty-year-old Jessie Con-ui (kawn-WEE’) is charged in the February 2013 stabbing death of corrections officer Eric Williams at the Canaan federal prison in Waymart.
Prosecutors allege that Con-ui attacked the 34-year-old victim in a prison housing unit because the inmate was angry about a search of his cell the previous day.
Court documents indicate that a dozen people will be brought in daily until a pool of 70 potential jurors has been selected.
The (Wilkes-Barre) Times Leader reports that one juror was excused Monday after saying she didn’t know whether she would be able to disregard news reports about the case.
